Built to Last: Durable Skills and the Engineering Workforce in the Age of AI and Big Data

In 1990, this coalition started with a simple idea: engineers and technicians should play a direct role in inspiring the next generation of innovators. That idea has grown into a nationwide network of programs, partnerships, and volunteers reaching millions of students each year.

Now we’re at an inflection point. Federal investment in STEM has declined, volunteer participation is softening, and AI is reshaping the engineering workforce faster than traditional pathways can respond. Employers want AI and data literacy, but they also want creative thinking, resilience, and leadership: durable skills that outlast any single technology cycle.

Once again, this coalition is being called on to build a future-ready engineering workforce, from pre-K through 16. This full-day convening brings together engineering societies, corporations, nonprofits, and funders to do exactly that. You’ll examine what the data says about the future of work, explore how to extend engineering learning in and out of the classroom with educators, and work through approaches to funding. And you’ll leave with a specific commitment and a partner to pursue it with, not another report.
