Your Knowledge. Their Future.
Meet Victoria Ibarra. She attended her first “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at The University of Texas at Austin when she was 10 years old. That experience set her on the path to becoming an engineer. Now she is a Girl Day volunteer and hopes she can bring out the engineer in girls.
Tips for Being a Role Model
Role Models are diverse. But they have one thing in common—the understanding that role models can inspire girls and boys from all communities and backgrounds.
Your level of involvement is entirely up to you. You can engage students in a variety of ways:
- Talk with a child about engineering
Sometimes one interaction can change the course of a child’s future.
- Visit with students online or in-person
In as little as 45 minutes you can tell the students about your job, how your work makes a difference, lead a hands-on engineering activity, and answer their questions!
- Be a mentor or judge
Sign up! Future City virtual mentors and judges help students see the wonders of engineering as they create cities of the future.

That’s the average grade Girl Day events receive from participants. When we asked how to make it even better they wanted more STEM activities. They also liked learning new things, eating good snacks, working in teams, and meeting engineers.

The research is in!
There are multiple studies looking at why women leave engineering and technology paths. But what if we turned this around and asked: What are the common factors that motivate girls to pursue—and then persist—in engineering education and careers?
DiscoverE is pleased to share Despite the Odds: Young Women Who Persist in Engineering, a comprehensive literature review conducted in partnership with Concord Evaluation Group.
Key findings from the report support DiscoverE’s long-held positions:
- Why girls choose engineering:
Giving girls the opportunity to do meaningful engineering activities—with role models—works. It builds their interest, confidence and understanding of engineering. And it works with boys too!
- Why young women stay:
Young women who persist in engineering have strong support networks and feel like they are part of a community.
We hope that this report will help inform your work to engage girls (and boys) in engineering and help young women succeed in the field.
